What is The East v. West Classic?
It is a Ryder Cup style golfing competition (Not a Golf Outing) started by a group of high school friends in 2002 which has grown into a yearly battle for the coveted "CUP". Each year Westhampton Beach High School Alumni along with family and friends come together and engage in a epic golfing battle. Teams are determined by geography. Team West being made up of players that live West of exit 70 on the L.I.E. and Team East of players that live East of exit 70.
The Legend of the CUP!
In the Spring of 2002 a small group of friends [known now as the Founding Fathers] came together and decided to create an annual golf tournament to ensure a once a year butting of the heads of old high school friends. There were eight original participants. Four from Westhampton Beach and four former Westhampton Beachers. Because most of them lived in and around Westchester geography dictated the original name of the tournament and it was called the Long Island v. Westchester Classic. This epic battle which took place at Centennial Golf Club went beyond everyones expectations and when the dust settled found Team Westchester besting the boys from Long Island. After the match the proud Sons of the Beach swore revenge as they watched Team Westchester drink from a half yard cup purchased by Evans Killeen and James Combs to act as a trophy for the winning team. This half yard has become the legendary "CUP".
Since that time Tom Beasley one of the Founding Fathers has created by hand a home for the "CUP". A beautiful wood box engraved with the legend of the cup and the winning team for each year. The "CUP" is locked away and kept safe by the winning teams captain until the one time each year...one team East or West has the chance to prove they are the better team and win the "Classic" and DRINK FROM THE CUP FOR THAT ONE NIGHT!
WINNERS DRINK FROM THE CUP.....LOSER WATCH!
Each year the "Classic" has grown in size and stature. The name has changed and the stakes have gotten higher. More people compete but the rules remain the same!
* Winners may only drink from the cup!
*Case shall remained locked until tournament day! (This rule has been broken...See The Beaz for this story HA!!)
*Losing Captain holds the keys and the losing trophy! (Yes we have one!)
*Winning Captain is responsible for the "CUP"!
